Leadership Programme for Literacy and Numeracy Middle Managers in ITPs

Participants in the first leadership programme run by The National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults undertook a variety of tasks designed to enhance their leadership skills. The tasks included motivating reluctant colleagues, conducting coaching conversations and resolving conflicts.

The programme ran from June 9-11 and was open to middle leaders in ITPs. Twenty-seven participants from sixteen ITPs attended the programme, which focussed on the leadership skills and strategies to implement and sustain the change to embed literacy and numeracy in Level 1-3 programmes.
Feedback from staff in ITPs highlighted the need to offer a leadership programme for middle managers involved in literacy and numeracy initiatives. The programme was organised by the team from the National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults and facilitated by Colleen Rigby from the Waikato Management School’s Executive MBA team.
Those attending the programme appreciated the chance to discuss leadership issues with colleagues and share experiences and resources. There was particular interest in the shift from seeing the embedding process as a new initiative to it becoming “business as usual”. Discussions will continue on the online forum developed as part of the programme.
