Programme in action
Waitiahoaho Emery (on the left) and her team from Waiariki Insitute of Technology Whare Takiura are delivering workplace literacy initiatives with Mäori Tourism providers in the region.
Waitiahoaho also provides leadership in the wider literacy and numeracy work with Mäori.
A lecture series in 2009 titled Focusing on literacy and numeracy, particularly as it relates to Mäori participation and success in vocational educationfeatured lectures from Sir Paul Reeves, Professor Russell Bishop and Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith discussing literacy and numeracy issues and the success of Mäori in vocational education and training.
For 2010, plans are underway to foster regional collaboration in sharing ideas and good practice in literacy and numeracy development with a symposium to be held in June. This is aimed at bringing together formal programme embedding specialists as well as providers of workplace programmes, to share knowledge, expertise and experiences that will build the capacity of literacy and numeracy education provision for and by Mäori.
