Case Studies

This section contains a collection of real-life examples and results of educators making embedded literacy and numeracy part of 'business as usual' in the New Zealand tertiary and workplace education sectors.

The case studies have been provided to give you an insight into adult literacy and numeracy education in the field.

Case Study: Thames Timber

These clips provide a comprehensive description of "Branching Out" at the Thames Timber Company. Manufacturing Manager Phil Cave and VETEL tutor Dave Bisset design and implement a literacy and numeracy programme which underpins a Lean Manufacturing approach that achieves sustainable improvements and productivity. Management and workers share their experience of the programme and describe the changes to the workplace and to their personal lives.

Case Study: The Speights Stubby Grass-ometer

By Warren Shepheard (Numeracy developer and part-time reporter).
This case study highlights the lengths that farming tutors will go to in the name of numeracy. Ken Payne teaches agricultural science at Telford Polytechnic in Balclutha.

Case Study: Damon Delivers

Damon is a literacy and numeracy tutor with the Apostolic Training Centre (ATC) in Hamilton. He runs regular, short workshops for tutors to enhance their delivery of literacy and numeracy. This case study documents a workshop for trades and alternative education tutors on speaking and listening.

Case Study: The Wairoa Waikaremoana Maori Trust Board

This case study shows how tutors at the Wairoa Waikaremoana Maori trust Board sustain their learning from Numeracy workshops. They run follow-up days with their learners so that the activities are applied. They find this an excellent way to put the practical ideas from numeracy workshops into action.

Case Study: UCOL Vocational Profiles

The literacy and numeracy team at Universal College of Learning have worked with their vocational tutors to develop profiles for each course. The profiles list the important Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking and Numeracy demands of each vocation. Students can now see what skills they will need to develop to be proficient in their chosen field. UCOL has kindly allowed the profiles to be shared on this site.

Case Study: Using the Assessment Tool

Train Me is a national PTE that has been delivering quality training to youth and adults across a range of programmes including alternative education, employment programmes and youth guarantee programmes.

Case Study: Differentiated Teaching

Adult educators almost always face many different levels of learners in their classrooms, with all the attendant difficulties in teaching.

Case Study: Giving Learners Control of Their Learning

This case study illustrates that by fully informing learners about the purpose of an assessment, and making time to discuss their results with them afterwards, we give learners the power to help themselves achieve their learning goals.

Case Study: Say C-H-E-E-S-E. Generating Ideas for a Writing Exercise

Teach your learners how to generate a wide range of ideas around a topic. Brainstorming in categories builds learner confidence as students prepare to write. Students can then draw from these ideas to plan and compose a piece of writing more easily.
