The 19th International Conference of Adults Learning Mathematics – A Research Forum (ALM19) is run in co-operation with the National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults (NCLANA) University of Waikato and the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Date: Tuesday June 26 (evening) to Friday June 29 (after lunch) 2012.
Venue: Auckland University of Technology city campus, 55 Wellesley Street East, Auckland Central, 1010, New Zealand.

Call for Papers
Researchers and practitioners in the fields of adult numeracy and mathematics education and related disciplines are invited to submit proposals for contributions to this international conference.
Conference theme: “Synergy - working together to achieve more than the sum of the parts”
The organisers particularly welcome papers discussing where numeracy and/or general mathematics ‘synergise’ with other competencies or contexts to enhance the skills needed for work and life in a constantly changing world. Possible themes for parallel sessions may include:
- embedding numeracy and/or general mathematics in vocational and work place training
- developing mathematical competency in different cultural contexts
- the relationship between literacy and numeracy in achieving mathematical competency
- the combination of skills necessary for financial literacy
- the synergy of affective and motivational issues with skill development
The final date for submission of proposals is May 11, 2012
Please use the Form for submission to submit your proposal. Please also include an abstract/summary of between 100-200 words describing your presentation/session.
Acceptance of proposals will be sent by May 18 2012.
Types of sessions
All presenters are encouraged to support dialogue between researchers and practitioners: researchers, by addressing the impact of their findings on practice and teachers and other practitioners, by considering research questions emerging from practice.
Paper presentation (45 minutes – 30 minute presentation and 15 minutes discussion) This may include reporting on a research project, instigating a theoretical discussion, reflectively critiquing practice, describing a new programme, providing a literature review. We encourage presenters to be as interactive as possible.
Workshop (90 minutes)
The purpose of a workshop may be to demonstrate and model practice, discuss issues, demonstrate practical implications of research or provide opportunities for participants to interact with technology based teaching strategies/resources.
Topic Group (90 minutes)
The major part of the time in this session is discussion of a nominated theme with a structured opening and may include short presentations from a minimum number of three participants (5 – 10 minutes). The abstract should make clear the content and focus and could provide key questions for discussion.
Poster
Posters will be displayed at the conference and time will be allocated for conference participants to discuss issues displayed. Contributors to this session should indicate in their abstract the topic to be displayed and the amount of space required.
