Developing literacy & numeracy learning outcomes

This tutorial is intended to help educators develop and articulate clear literacy and/or numeracy outcomes or goals to address gaps between learners’ skills and course demands.

This unit is about making a plan for ‘what to do’ when you’ve identified a gap between learners’ literacy and numeracy abilities and the vocational course demands.

Learning goals in Knowing diagram

Every vocational course or qualification is made up of a well-defined set of learning outcomes and/or performance criteria. Students are obliged to meet the criteria in order to pass or to gain the qualification. Embedded literacy and numeracy teaching requires us to look for opportunities to build learners’ communication and number strategies and knowledge within the context of obligatory vocational outcomes. To be most effective, we need to be explicit about the literacy and numeracy learning goals we’re embedding in our teaching or training.
