This tutor professional development package including research and resource creation was based on the ‘whare’ or ‘fale’ model readapted and renamed the ‘Me, myself and I’ model. By using different youth focused images to gather the information which informs “knowing the learner”. The model explores student personalities and strengths, realistic views of students from a personal level, left and right dominance style and incorporates teaching methodology to flexibly suit the learner. This interactive teaching and learning model is useful for developing programmes which are engaging for a youth audience.

Taulu has always had a passion about music and art in learning. The focus of his research has been finding ways to utilise these avenues to engage Māori and Pasifika learners who otherwise find it difficult to succeed in education. His current research and ongoing study is to explore evidence that music and art can be used to teach, learn, and maximise the potential of an artistic thinker in an auditory society and school system. In this day and age, these are the kinds of students who are leaving our schools in droves. Taulu asks the question, “Are we going to do something to stop a potential downhill spiral of an uneducated, and soon to be, unwanted generation?”
