Place Value. Why is it so important? What are some of the key ideas? What tools can I use to support my teaching?
Pupils should be able to read write and order whole numbers, recognise the position of a digit gives its value; count on or back in tens or hundreds from any two or three-digit number; multiply or divide any whole number by 10 or 100; understand and use decimal notation for tenths, hundredths, and thousandths in context.

Place value
Warren Shepheard
Warren spent 16 years as a teacher working in primary and intermediate schools in the Rotorua area. In 1985 he joined the Ministry of Education as a mathematics adviser in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region.
After ‘Tomorrows Schools’ in 1989 he worked as a maths advisor with the University of Waikato. In 2000 he went into private enterprise as a mathematics consultant and contracted to SKillNZ where he ran numeracy workshops for tutors throughout New Zealand. For the last 5 years he has contracted to TEC working in adult numeracy education. He was also involved in the writing of the numeracy progressions.
