This webinar will demonstrate an interactive online project which was aimed at encouraging Māori learners to engage in reading and writing using e-technology attractive to youth culture. The Whakamanawa online project included a range of interactive activities such as – discussion forum, learners read text and write responses, online activities to elicit discussion, learners and tutors involved in website development.

Margot Syder
My present role is Manager of Training and Education at Training For You, a private training provider in Whanganui. I’ve had a diverse career in adult literacy, over the past 14 years. I’ve worked as a specialist literacy and numeracy tutor in the vocational contexts and on intensive literacy programmes. I’ve designed Family Literacy programmes and helped a number of organisations embed literacy and numeracy into their programmes. In 2009, I designed and taught our online NCALE course (vocational tutor). As a champion for literacy at Training For You, I have mentored tutors, designed systems and conducted action research. There is always something new to learn and ways we can look at improving practice. Each challenge is unique and requires us to think creatively how we can meet the needs of our students.
Cindy James
I have been involved in the adult literacy field for six years. I have taught LLN across all our programmes, and more recently I taught the English programme. I am currently administering the online assessment tool within our organisation. I am passionate about teaching students to improve their reading, writing and communication skills, and to express themselves through their writing. I love being witness to the changes that occur within a student’s life when they discover the power within their own reading and writing.
