This webinar takes a thematic approach to writing by guiding hesitant writers to draw on their personal memories and experiences. Blending Māori and Western education pedagogies, this approach uses listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Mei and Makuini
Mei Winitana & Makuini Hohapata
Mei Winitana: Kia ora! Mei is a Kaimahi in Maori pedagogy / Literacy Developer for the National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Centre (NCLANA). She also shares her time as a kaimahi on the ‘Ako Tuapapa’ team (Literacy / Numeracy at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. She comes from a background in Special Education using Māori pedagogy, and as Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB Māori) for seven years. Her Masters research evaluated the assessment tools in a transition to English programme in a Kaupapa Māori School”. Current research interests include Maori women, culturally-responsive pedagogies and Maori literacy.
Makuini Hohapata: is an academic staff member at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi. She has worked within the School of Iwi Development - delivering and overseeing computer programmes on the marae throughout motu (Country) for Pakeke (more mature learners) and Deliver Numeracy and Literacy on the Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills Course design for young men; she has also delivered Numeracy & Literacy training for the National Institute for Maori Education; and has worked within Computer Information Science & Technology delivering computer training and eWananga upskilling for the Bachelor of Matauranga Maori.
