The Theoretical Framework Overview

The theoretical framework outlines the research-based understandings that can be used as a basis for making principled decisions about strengthening literacy and numeracy in vocational training. On-going development of the theoretical framework will take account of emerging evidence about means of strengthening literacy and numeracy that include, for example, embedded provision.

The theoretical framework currently comprises five sets of research-based findings or understandings:

  • How adults develop their literacy and numeracy expertise.
  • The features of effective embedded literacy and numeracy provision.
  • The workplace as a context for strengthening literacy and numeracy.
  • Managing and sustaining change to professional practice.
  • The role of assessment in strengthening literacy and numeracy for adults.

The key findings or understandings from research are presented in three forms, giving progressively more detailed information. These can be used in different ways depending on the purpose and audience.

Overview

The overview gives a single-sentence summary of the key understandings for each set of understandings. This overview is a useful introduction to the research findings.

Summary

Each key understanding is expanded with three or four bullet points that provide a brief summary of the research findings.

Detailed

A detailed description is given for each key understanding. This includes a discussion of the research findings, the implications for practice and the reference list.
