Listening vocabulary

Listening vocabulary refers to the words a person knows (can understand) when they hear them in spoken English. As they begin to develop literacy expertise, most adults will build a listening vocabulary. That is, they will understand the meanings of a range of words and short phrases when they hear them.

This starting point will apply mainly but not exclusively to ESOL learners who have not already gained some fluency in English. It may also be applicable to other learners with a limited listening vocabulary. Listening vocabulary provides the foundation for developing phonological awareness and building reading and writing skills.
